Fort of Naousa
The fort of Naoussa, also known as Kasteli, dominates the edge of the picturesque port. It was built by the Venetians, around the end of the 13th, beginning of the 14th century. From the core of the medieval settlement, some parts at the edge of the port and of its southern perimeter, are still preserved to this day.
It is the jewel of Naoussa and is reminiscent of the time when the the rulers of the island, the Sommaripa family (a family of nobles rushed from Languedoc, France) built it, to protect the island from the pirates. Although half-submerged, it remains a charming attraction that ties in wonderfully with the blue of the sea and the surrounding area.
Kastelli was actually a medieval fortified settlement around the port and not only a small fort of the jetty. The submerged wall of the port, ended in the circular bastion which is the only remarkable part of the fort of Naoussa that still survives. It was renovated by the Sommaripa family at the end of the 15th century while the characteristic circular tower was added at the entrance of the port, around 1500.
