Lykian Grave
The Lycian tomb with its Doric facade carved out of the rockface is located directly below the Knights' Castle. It is a perfectly preserved tomb of the 4th century A.D., the only one of its kind in Greece and one of the most impressive monuments in the island. Lycian tombs were richly decorated with paintings, reliefs and inscriptions, very few of which have survived over the centuries. Although the decoration has long vanished, the structure is in very good condition. It reminds of the funerary monuments of Lycia. «Licos is the Greek word for wolf» Lycians were the inhabitants of Asia Minor region because their god Lycios Apollo was worshipped in the form of a wolf. It constitutes a proof about the close relations between the locals and the residents of opposite coast of Asia Minor.
You will find it by walking on the regional path that connects the lighthouse to Mandraki. If you are not scared of steep stairs and heights, then this is a must-see. The views from the tomb are lovely as is the journey there. From up there you can get some excellent shots of the tomb as well as of the surrounding islands.
