Church of Panagia Ai-Giannis

A small whitewashed church with an interesting architecture. Actually, it is not one church but two small basilicas with a common bell tower in the center. The church of Panagia was the first to be built at the end of the 19th century. Adjacent to it, is the church of Ai-Giannis. The church of Panagia – Ai-Giannis as it is called, dominates the top of a hill east of Stavros. On its celebration day on August 15, a great festival takes place in the courtyard. Locals and visitors dance to the sound of traditional music till early in the morning. The feast is accompanied by traditional food and plenty of wine. The climb up to the church may be a bit demanding, but the magnificent view of Chora and the beautiful sunset that one can enjoy from its courtyard is worth the effort. The best time of the day to visit the church, is at sunset.
