Potamos or Avantas Castle
On the provincial road leading from Alexandroupolis to the village of Avanta, in the hinterland, north of Alexandroupolis, on a hillside, are the impressive ruins of a medieval fortress, from which are preserved three square towers and two towering towers.
The castle was probably built to protect the coastal area, and especially Traianoupolis, from the invasions of Bulgarians and other barbarians from the north. In addition, the point at which it is built controls one of the crossings from the plain of Komotini to the east.
