Sikinos

Sikinos (Greek: Σίκινος) is a small island in the southern Cyclades of the Aegean Sea and is located between the islands of Folegandros and Ios and 14 and 10 miles respectively. From Piraeus it is 102 miles, that is about 8 hours. The island of Sikinos, according to Mythology, was named after Sikinos the son of Thoanda, King of Limnos, and grandson of Vacchos and Ariadne, who lived in Naxos. Ypsipyli, trying to save Thoanda's son from the Lemnian women who caused the massacre of their husbands, hid him in a wooden shrine and threw him into the sea. Discharging this wooden shrine from the waves, it was eclipsed in Sikinos where the fishermen saved Thoanda. In this island Thoas married the native nymph named Niida and Sikinos was born, who reigned on the island. Sikinos has three settlements: Alopronia, Chorio and the Castle. Alopronia (als = sea + providence) is called the small harbor of Sikinos where you can find shops of all kinds and hotels. Chora consists of two separate districts, the Castle and the Chorio, spread over two facing hillsides.
