Astypalea

Astypalea is a gorgeous island, located right on the edge where the Dodecanese meets the Cyclades. This small butterfly-like shaped island has escaped mass tourism so far, so it is likely you will find private beaches and have some of the key attractions all to yourself. Rising from the stunning blue of the Aegean Sea, Astypalea is an explorer's heaven, and a find for those looking to escape the madding crowds of summer vacationers. An ideal destination for a relaxed and quiet holiday in the sun with a unique Greek summer vibe. The island boasts beautiful scenery, incredible views and some nice beaches, but the main highlight is the island’s capital, the stunning Chora, one of the most beautiful in the whole Aegean. It is a unique blend of Cycladic and Dodecanese architecture, with whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and an incredile castle at the top dotting the landscape.

The island is divided into the western part and the eastern part of the island with a narrow strip connecting the two parts. Due to its shape, the island has earned the nickname “the butterfly of the Aegean”.  Astypalea is considered the first green island in Greece. Authorities here have partnered with motor companies to implement a fleet of electric cars, and scooters to use as ride sharing or ride hailing. This jewel of Greek islands has managed to maintain its iconic authenticity and folklore without rejecting modernity. There is plenty to do and see in and around the island, and this guide will help you understand why Astypalea is the Greek Island you cannot miss.

Astypalea is a Greek island in the southeastern Aegean Sea. It belongs to the Dodecanese Island group and is the fifth largest island.

Astypalea or Astypalaia is assumed that got its name from the ancient words asty + palaios (meaning old town) from the Dorian inhabitants, who found traces of earlier Phoenician settlements on the island. The island was also known as "Pyrrha", "Pylea" and "Ichthyoessa".

Getting Around

HOW TO GET AROUND | Car Rental, Bus. Taxi, Boats, Scooter / ATV

Astypalea is a large island with limited public transportation, so the best way to move around the island, is by car or ATV. On the island of Astypalea, there is also a comprehensive plan that introduce a ‘vehicle-sharing’ service exclusive to electric cars, scooters and bicycles that any resident or visitor can use, for as long as they need (switching users), paying only an amount for the time used. Road conditions are good on Astypalea, but many are dirt roads, so it might be better to rent a 4x4. There are plenty of rentals in the port town of Astypalea, so there is no need to book beforehand. A cheaper alternative to the car, is renting a scooter or ATV, if you are comfortable with it. You will need an EU or international Drivers license to rent a car, scooter or ATV.

Bus: In case you prefer not to drive, there is a relatively frequent bus service during the summer connecting the Chora to the other villages of the island like Livadi and Analipsi. During low season, buses are less frequent. Buses do not run till very late, so check the schedule in order not to miss the last one. Hiking: If you do not fancy driving or taking the bus, Astypalea is a great destination for hikers, with plenty of walking routes all over the island. Just be aware that it can get very hot over the summer months and even if the wind is cool the sun will still be very strong. Boat: There are boat tours to the nearby islands or remote beaches. All boats depart from the main port. Taxi: It might be ideal for short drives, but taxis are not cheap and not easy if you are looking to explore multiple places.

Tips: All bus schedules and taxi drivers’ phone numbers, is displayed on a board near the Windmills in Chora.
