Tilos

Tilos (Greek: Τήλος) is one of the Dodecanese islands, the seventh in descending area and is located between Nisyros and Chalki. The island's territory is rocky with the exception of a small fertile valley in the middle of the island, which ends up in the idyllic sand of Eristos 1 km long. The island consists of two main settlements, Livadia, which is also the port of the island, and the Megalo Chorio. The capital of Tilos is the Megalo Chorio located in the hinterland, to the north of the island. It is built amphitheatrically on the hillside, the top of which is the ruins of the castle of the Knights of Ioannina. Until the early 18th century, the village was within the Castle. The houses of the settlement are stone-built and retain elements from the traditional architecture. Tilos has many archaeological monuments, such as the paleontological finds of Elephant dwarves in the Charcadio Cave, which visitors can see at the Museum of the Megalo Chorio.The whole island constitutes a vast ecological park and is protected by international treaties. In ancient times, Tilos was famous for its herbs and became really prosperous during the classic period.
