The sea has always been a reference point for the people of Elafonisos. The island has one of the biggest fishing fleets in Greece and most of its people are engaged in fishing or have a career at sea. The feast of fishermen, organized by the local Fishermen Club, takes place in the last 10 days of August and attracts many people. The festival includes local dances, live music and plenty of food and fish. At the same time the folklore and nautical history of the island is presented through various exhibits.
On December 12, the citizens of Elafonisos celebrate the patron saint of the island, Agios Spyridon. It is an important day for the small island, whose citizens reverently thank the Saint for the prosperity of the local community and the protection he offers to all sailors and fishermen. On that day, a divine service is held in the Holy Church of Agios Spyridon in the port of the island.
A three-day festival takes place from the 6th until the 9th of July each year. The 6th of July is the anniversary date of the liberation of the island and the date of the inauguration of the church of Agios Spyridon, patron saint of the island. Throughout the three-day festival, various events take place such as the Festival of Traditional Dances with the participation of many local dancing groups.
On August 15, the island celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A divine service is held in the Holy Church of Panagia Katonisiotissa in Kato Nissi, followed by a festival with the participation of all citizens. The service lasts all night long and at the same time, young boys and girls head to the beach of Panagia, light up fires, dance and sing until the morning. The festival includes traditional dances by the Elafonisos Women's Dance Team and other dancing groups. The festival is very popular and attracts people from Mani and the island of Kythira as well.
