Portitsa Gorge

The impressive Portitsa gorge is a 500-meter-long gorge, located at the eastern foot of Orliakas mountain. Its orientation is from west to the east. In front of the oblong mouth of the gorge stands proudly the old stone bridge of Portitsa, one of the most popular and beautiful bridges in Greece which attracts numerous of visitors throughout the year. The gorge is located between the mountains of Spileo and Lykotrypa and is crossed by the Venetikos river, a tributary of Aliakmonas. The Venetikos river creates the small Kanavi valley which ends in the big gorge. The towering cliffs on both of its sides, are really impressive as they reach up to 200 meters in height, near the entrance.

Hiking the gorge is a unique experience. During the winter, crossing may be difficult as the water can be deep while during the summer months the water level falls near the bridge, allowing the crossing of the gorge. The starting point for most hiking activities is at the village of Spileo. Following the path that locals used for centuries you reach the Portitsa valley and the stunning old stone bridge.

Flora and fauna is very rich in the area and many rare species of birds, find refuge on the vertical rocks of the gorge. The fish fauna is also rich with approximately 12 different species of fish. Hiking Portitsa Gorge is easy, suitable for beginners and families with children.
