Springs of Aroanios River
The karst springs of River Aroanios emerge in a small plane tree forest, near the village of Planetero in Achaia. The water gushes through the rocks and forms Aroanios River, a tributary of Ladonas. A detailed international geological study lists 41 of these spring outlets. The springs along with some old watermills lie in an idyllic landscape, 700 meters above sea level, not far from Kalavrita and Klitoria. It is an ideal destination for day trips in nature for people of the surrounding area but also for those who love nature and want to escape city noise. The plane tree forest grows on a plateau between a labyrinth of water meanders and covers an area of about 120 acres. Some of the centuries old plane trees have trunks with a diameter of almost 4 meters. In the area also grow several rare species of Peloponnesian flora.
The area of the Planetero is located within the Natura 2000 area “Mount Helmos & Stygos waters” and is protected. From this point start mountaineering paths to Elatofyto and Durduvana as well as the E4 path to Lousous and Kalavrita. Although the area is dominated by commercial tourism it still retains its natural beauty. Visitors can find trout farms, traditional taverns where can taste delicious grilled or fried trouts and some small shops selling souvenirs and local products.
