Palia Kavala Waterfall
The waterfall is located approximately 1,500 meters from the village of Palea (Old) Kavala. A beautiful and easy path alongside a stream leads to this unique waterfall which is about 15 meters high. Sometimes a lot of water is falling down from the waterfall, sometimes not, it depends on the amount of the rainfall and the season. The water has been carving the rock for years creating two natural pools with crystal-clear waters. The water is icy, but do not hesitate to make a jump into the small lake, it is definitely very refreshing. There is a thick rope hanging from the top of the waterfall where you can climb carefully to the rock from where you can make a jump into the small lake under the waterfall. Next to the waterfall there are two big wooden tables and benches where you can have a picnic.
This little paradise is in the middle of a dense forest with ivy and cypresses covering the tree trunks. The tall trees offer natural shade and form a small oasis of coolness against summer heat. Most of the hike is under the shade of the trees. The path passes over wooden bridges and next to the ruins of abandoned water mills. The waterfall can also be reached from the city of Kavala by hiking the "Road of Water" as the locals call it, that connects the modern city with the traditional village of Palea Kavala. Whatever path you choose to take, the degree of difficulty is low. If you are looking for a shorter hiking route, you have to take the road to the village of Palea Kavala. Before reaching the village, on the right hand there is a sign pointing toward the waterfall. Shortly after you exit the main road, you will come across an abandoned quarry and about 500 meters further, the road ends and you have to park the car. A short path begins from that point which will take you to a place of unparallel natural beauty where the waterfall is located. A tour to this part of the prefecture of Kavala, can combine the waterfall, the village of Old Kavala, nice hikes in the forest and picnic under the shadow of the plane trees.
