Fiskardo Lighthouse 0860
The Fiskardo lighthouse is one of the most beautiful attractions on the island of Kefalonia. Located on a promontory on the east side of Kefallonia's northern tip, marking the entrance to the channel between Kefallonia and the neighboring, smaller island of Ithaca. There are actually two lighthouses in the area from different eras; a Venetian one and a modern lighthouse located a short distance uphill from the Venetian. However, only the latter is still functional. The existence of the lighthouses in this part of the island, indicates the important role of the village’s small port in the past. The port served as a safe anchorage for the Venetian’s small fleet, as well as a gateway for exporting local products such as wine, olive oil etc. to other parts of Greece and the Mediterranean.
The Venetian lighthouse was built during the 16th century and features a round masonry tower, adjacent to a keeper’s house. Parts of the ancient tower remain in good condition and can still be seen from afar. Unfortunately, the area around the old structures is fenced and not accessible. The newer lighthouse was constructed in 1892 and features a square stone tower with lantern and gallery. During World War II, it was extinguished and was not relighted, until 1945. This lighthouse was first lit with kerosene as source of light, but in 1999 the oil engines were replaced and the lighthouse became electrically operated.
The big earthquake that hit the island in 1953 caused severe damage to the structure. The tower had to be rebuilt in order to continue guide vessels sailing the passage between Kefalonia and Ithaca. The tower rises 14,2 meters and its focal plane is 27 meters. The current beacon exhibits a white flash every 3 seconds and in clear weather has a range of 7 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located 130 meters north of the point of the homonymous bay, at a focal height of 28 meters.
A 10-minutes’ walk through the pine woods along the water’s edge brings you to the lighthouse. If you then walk to the new lighthouse, you can do a circular walk which takes you to an ancient a Christian Basilica and brings you back to the harbor. The path is slightly uneven with some rock outcrops but well-marked and not too difficult. There are picturesque views of Ithaca, the coast of Kefalonia, and the crystal-clear waters of the Ioanian Sea. If in Fiskardo, it is definately worth to have a look at those landmarks. The place offers good photo opportunities as you can see all of Fiskardo from here.
