A Historic Beacon with Sea Views on Aegina’s Coast

Nestled on the southern coast of Aegina, the Plakakia Lighthouse is a hidden gem with a rich nautical legacy. Built in 1881, this 9-meter-high circular stone tower stands proudly with a focal height of 11 meters, offering breathtaking views across the Saronic Gulf to the nearby island of Agistri.

Right beside the lighthouse, you’ll find the picturesque Chapel of the Holy Apostles, adding to the area's serene and historic charm. While the original keeper’s house, visible in old photographs, no longer exists, the lighthouse remains a symbol of the island's seafaring tradition.

Though now automated and uninhabited, Plakakia Lighthouse continues to be a cherished part of Aegina’s maritime heritage. In 2019, it was officially declared a Monument of Modern Greek History by the Ministry of Culture, following a proposal from the Association of Active Citizens of Aegina. This recognition honors:

  1. Its place within the 19th-century Argosaronic lighthouse network
  2. Its distinctive architecture and contribution to maritime safety
  3. Its enduring connection to Greek nautical culture
  4. Its role as a landmark for sailors and islanders alike

A visit to Plakakia offers more than just scenic beauty—it's a journey through the maritime soul of Aegina.
