Marathonisi
Marathonisi or the island of Turtle is a small islet in the bay of Laganas, close to the beach of Limni Keri in Zakynthos. Crystal turquoise waters, lush natural environment and beautiful sea caves compose a magnificent landscape. There were people living on the island until the Second World War but nowadays it is uninhabited. Only the Caretta Caretta turtles come to the islet every summer to lay their eggs.
On the islet there are two wonderful beaches, one with pebbles and the other with white sand. The first is ideal for snorkeling and exploration since on its right there are two large sea caves in which small boats can enter as well as many smaller ones. Small sandy beaches are formed between the caves, dreamy for swimming. The second beach is located in the front part of the island, overlooking the beach of Laganas. A tongue of sand penetrates the sea and is ideal for relaxation, sunbathing and swimming. This is the place where Caretta-Caretta turtles make their nests. At the spot there are guards of the National Marine Park who protect the island, the turtles and their eggs.
Apart from the two wonderful beaches, the island has also rich vegetation, consisting of olive trees, oaks and pines and a lot of marathos from where the island took its name. The island of "turtles" is in the Natura 2000 protection program as the sea turtles come here every summer and lay their eggs and is also part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.
Thousands of visitors visit Marathonisi every year to swim in the crystal-clear waters and admire its rare beauty. Marathonisi can be visited by private boat or by small boats from Laganas or Keri. There are no tourist facilities on the island therefore take care to carry with you water and other supplies. Mooring and overnight stay on the islet is prohibited.
