Prickly pear of Symi

He is said to have arrived in Europe from Mexico along with the Spanish in the 16th century. Today it grows throughout the South Aegean, and almost all over Greece. In southern Aegean, it is most appreciated in Symi, Kimolos and Naxos. It is cleaned with a lot of care and is usually eaten fresh. Some areas are also dried. One of the most unusual sweets is the misokofti of Symi, boiled prunes and flour.

The Misokofti is a soft cream that looks very much like the mustalevria but is made with juice of ripe red roasted pear juice. Prickly pear is a fruit with several beneficial properties and many nutrients. It has a high content of vitamin C but also copper, potassium, calcium and especially magnesium.

The Akoumia, which are basically donuts, are unique because, in addition to the basic ingredients of the donuts, ie flour, yeast, sugar, salt and water, they boil boiled rice (which we do not perceive in taste) and flavored with orange and ouzo. Akoumia is a traditional sweet of Symi. They make and distribute them in every chapel when it celebrates. They consider the sweet of joy, and they made them even when the baby took off his first tooth. The Akoumia is also the Symi pie of the New Year's Day. They put in a coin and whoever finds it is the lucky one of the year. Only on New Year's Day they put honey from above.
