The first windmills in Greece were constructed around the 12th century. Since then, more than 50,000 mills, 2,000 of them in the Aegean islands, were built throughout the country. Once they were major production centers for local communities, producing flour for bread. Today they are an integral part of Greece’s heritage and economic history. The whitewashed windmills on the mountain slopes or by the sea are one of the most iconic images from Greece.
