Tomato Industrial Museum
The Tomato Industrial Museum is located on the beach of Vlichada, in Santorini. An old tomato factory was transformed in 2014 into a modern Industrial Museum. Through different stations, you learn about the process that was used in the early-mid 1900’s to produce and can tomato paste. The small-fruited Santorini tomato is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product since 2006 and one of the island’s most famous and traditional products.
The guided tour covers the history of tomato farming (the Santorini tomato) and the production of tinned tomatoes in Santorini, which ended in the 1980s. You get an insight into the lives of the workers whose livelihoods depended on this industry and a reminder of how hard it was to make a living on Santorini before the tourists arrived in this modern era. At the end, you can taste the tomato paste and make your own tin. You are shown how to use the canning machine, pop an item inside, put the lid on the can, press the pedal and make a can. You can choose a label, glue it on and you have a fab souvenir, included in the price.
An audio tour is available, in five different languages (greek, english, french, german and italian). You can also watch a video with interviews with former factory workers, including some who were there during the 1956 earthquake that devastated much of the island.
