The first National Park to be established was the Northern Sporades National Marine Park in 1992, which includes land and sea areas of the archipelago, because they are a refuge for the Mediterranean seal. The caretta caretta turtle and the monachus monachus seal are just two of the dozens of species of fish, birds, reptiles and mammals that live in Greek marine parks in perfect harmony with nature. In Greece there is also the largest protected maritime area in the Mediterranean, the National Marine Park of Alonissos-Northern Sporades.
