Church of Agia Paraskevi

The small orthodox church of Agia Paraskevi in the Valley of Tempe was built in the early 1910’s but there was an ancient shrine devoted to the Goddess Aphrodite here many centuries ago. The church was built by the Hellenic Railways Organization and financed by the staff of the organization. The main reason for the construction was a miracle that took place here, when a huge rock detached from the mountain and instead of ending up in the passing train, changed course and fell into the river. It is small but suggestive chapel, however, lacks the charm of other older churches and monasteries. Inside the church, in addition to numerous icons, there are also the relics of the Saint that are object of pilgrimage. Photos are not allowed to be taken inside the chapel as sign of respect, but you are welcome to enter, look, light a candle or leave a small donation which helps with upkeep.

Near the chapel, there is a small opening in the rock, which is the entrance of the cave where there is a spring of holy water, which can be reached by passing through a narrow tunnel. The cave is dark and so narrow that a single person can barely fit. Some people find it hard to go all the way, so they just light a candle right at the entrance of the cave. The chapel is one of the most important pilgrimages for the Greeks and Roma in the region of Thessaly and attracts thousands of visitors each year, especially the day of the feast, on July 26th.

The chapel of Agia Paraskevi is located in the center of the straits of the valley of Tempe and is linked to the National highway with a metal pedestrian bridge which passes over the Peneios River. Before the construction of the bridge in the 1960’s, people could only cross the river by small wooden boats. This place has become quite popular, both to Greeks and tourists and is well worth a detour if you are on the road between Larissa and Katerini. It is the most common stop you can do at Tempe if you want to stretch your legs and light a candle.
