Monastery of Agios Savvas
The Holy Monastery of Agios Savvas is perched on a hilltop above the port of Pothia. It is a nunnery which was founded by the monk Hierotheos Kourounis at the end of the 19th century. After his death, Savvas Hotzevitis came to the monastery in 1926 and stayed till he died on 7 April 1947. He lived there as the priest and spiritual father of the nuns of the Convent of All Saints. The monastery is named after him who is buried in a coffin made of silver inside the church.
He was a great ascetic, confessor, icon painter and miracle-worker as he was a man who had the gift to cure people from all kinds of diseases. St. Savvas lived humbly, helping widows and orphans. As a confessor, he combined leniency with severity. He was lenient on certain sins and severe to others. For him blasphemy against God and all Saints was one of the greatest sins. His presence was to be important both for the monastery and for the whole island. St. Savvas of Kalymnos (also known as Saint Savvas the New) is one of the newest contemporary saints of the Eastern Orthodox church and the patron saint of the Greek island of Kalymnos.
Lots of people visit the monastery in order to pray, over the relic of St. Savvas the Younger, and ask for help. St. Savvas is believed to be a miracle-worker and helps couples who have difficulties having children. The spiritual work of the monastery is particularly important. The nunnery consists of various buildings and chapels, among them a conference center, a library and a museum with exhibits of everyday objects sed by the Saint and sacred icons, painted by himself.
The Holy Monastery celebrates the 5th Sunday of Great Lent which is two weeks before Easter and on December 5, the feast day of St. Savvas. From its courtyard visitors can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over the whole island. Nuns, are still living in the monastery and visitors must be dressed according to the monastery's dress code: long sleeves and skirts for women and long trousers and sleeves for men. On the way to the monastery lies a very nice folk museum where you can become absorb in the history of the everyday life on Kalymnos.
