A Secluded Monastery on Mount Karesa in Hydra
The Monastery of Saint Matrona is a serene hillside monastery located on Mount Karessa, on the island of Hydra. Set in a quiet and relatively remote area, it lies about 15 minutes from the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, making it an ideal stop for visitors exploring Hydra’s inland walking routes.
History & Setting
The monastery was founded in 1865 by Chrysanthos Karatzas and is a functioning nunnery. Within the complex, you’ll also find the charming chapel of Saint Sozon, perched on the rugged slope of Mount Karessa—an added highlight that enhances the spiritual and scenic character of the site.
How to Get There
Reaching the monastery is a rewarding experience, especially for those who enjoy hiking. The route begins at Hydra’s picturesque harbor and takes about 40 minutes on foot to reach the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. From there, the path continues through a peaceful pine forest near the Monastery of Saint Fotini, before turning into a dirt trail that leads to “Mylos,” an 18th-century stone building once used as a grain mill. At this point, the trail splits, and the path toward Saint Matrona gradually leads you to the monastery.
Visiting Information
The Monastery of Saint Matrona is a female monastery and celebrates its feast day on October 20. Access is mainly on foot, via the island’s well-marked hiking paths, offering a quiet and authentic experience away from the busy harbor.
