Poros

Poros is a very beautiful little island of the Saronic Gulf between Athens and the Peloponnese. It is in same island group as Aegina, Agistri, Hydra and Spetses and is often combined as hopping island trip from Athens. Something most people do not realize about Poros is that it is made up of two different islands, the islands of Sfairia and Kalavria. Kalavria is the bigger part and Sfairia, which includes the town of Poros, is the smaller part. Maybe not as eye-catching as its neighbor Hydra, Poros does have plenty of charm. It is blessed with dense pine forests, fantastic beaches, gorgeous emerald waters and a charming town with grand traditional mansions and cobbled streets.

The island of Poros is separated from the mainland by a 250-meter narrow channel across its narrowest point. Water taxis run back and forth all day taking people between Poros Town and the town of Galatas on the Greek mainland. This gives visitors the chance to travel fast to the Peloponnese, and make easy excursions to the ancient theatre of Epidavros, the archaeological site of Mycenae and the historic town of Nafplio. The best thing about Poros is that it is a lively island all year round, so would have no problem to visit at any time and discover its hidden secrets. Poros is a magical place that has attracted many eminent artists, writers, and poets. It is a great place to visit if you have two days in Athens and you want to escape or if you are just looking for an easy to travel destination for relaxing vacations. Poros has it all and will definitely charm you.

Poros is a small Greek island in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf. The only male-named island of Greece is separated from the Peloponnese by a 200 m wide sea channel, with thw town of Galatas on the mainland across the strait.

In fact Poros is not one but two islands: Sphaeria, the southern part, which is of volcanic origin, where today's city is located, and Kalaureia, also Kalavria or Calauria, the northern and largest part. A bridge connects the two islands over a narrow strait.

Getting Around

HOW TO GET AROUND POROS | Car Rental, Bus. Water Taxi, Scooter / ATV

Poros is a small island with a limited road network. The best way to explore Poros Town is on foot but if you would like to further explore the island, you can rent a car, scooter or bicycle. Moreover, there are frequent bus services from Poros Town to some of the beaches. Taxi rides are reasonably priced and, in many cases, rates are fixed. There are also small traditional boats that can take you to the beaches around the island. In case of a bike or a car, you can rent either of these two at multiple points on the island or in Galatas on the mainland. Mind that parking in Poros Town is difficult.
