A Rich History Behind Spianada Square
The name "Spianada" is derived from the Italian word "spianare," meaning "to clear the ground," a reference to the Venetians' decision in 1576 to demolish the surrounding buildings in order to strengthen the island’s defenses. Over the centuries, the French also left their mark on the square, notably by planting trees that continue to provide shade and enhance the square’s atmosphere today.

Today, Spianada Square is divided into Upper and Lower sections, serving as the center of Corfu’s social and commercial life.
