Stone Bridges: Papastathis Bridge

The Papastathis bridge is located between the villages of Driskos and Anatoliki in the prefecture of Ioannina, Epirus. The bridge has four arches and stretches over the Arachthos river. It was built in 1746 and financed with 175 Venetian florins by the Abbot of Viliza Monastery, Agapios. The money was not enough, so people from the surrounding villages financed the project as well. The construction of the bridge was imperative since 3 to 4 people died every year trying to cross the river.

In 1942, the Germans bombed the largest of the arches but did not succeed to bring it down. This is a good example of the good work and the strength of the bridge. The Papastathis bridge has been accompanied for centuries by a local legend according to which when Arachthos river brings down large quantities of water, the voices of a black man and a rooster are heard. The same legend says that both were built on the foundations of the bridge. Near the bridge, there was a water mill, the inn of Papaelias, and the stone bridge of the Patriarch.
