Skoteina

Skoteina or Morna (Dark place), as was the name of the village until August 31, 1936, is located 15 km southwest of Kato Milia in the prefecture of Pieria. The place where the village is located is not very sunny due to the dense vegetation, so the inhabitants named it Skoteina (Dark). The village has been uninhabited for about 40 years. The people of Morna abandoned it and founded a new village, Fotina. In the village there are two churches, the church of Agia Paraskevi and that of Agios Nikolaos. The church of Agios Nikolaos is said to have collapsed twice. The second time was in 1950.

The first written reference to Morna can be found in the Codes of the Zavorda Monastery of Grevena, where a donation to the Monastery is recorded, around 1850. According to tradition, the first inhabitants were refugees from Petra, who came to the area and settled in the cells of the monastery of Agios Nikolaos. On December 19, 1943, 10 residents of the village were executed by the Nazis, among them the priest of the village Christos Tsolakis. The village was set on fire and looted by the Germans.

In Morna there was a wood factory which until 1949, was not fully operated. After the end of the civil war, the factory operated normally until 1969 when it closed down and moved to the near city of Litochoro. It should be noted that the beech of the area is considered to be of excellent quality and one of the best in the world. According to the professor - historian Giannis Kaztaridis, the quality of the wood was so good that was chosen as the main construction material in order to build the yacht of King Otto. Recognizing the important contribution of the factory to the National Economy, Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis awarded the Gold Medal to those in charge, in the context of the Thessaloniki International Fair. The factory building still stands at the entrance of the village.

There are many scary stories that have turned Morna into a "haunted" village whose inhabitants decided to leave it overnight. Dark figures that suddenly appear and disappear, doors that open and close on their own, eerie voices and many more creepy phenomena. Even today, the signs inside the abandoned houses from the hasty departure of the inhabitants are visible.
