Katakolo
The small picturesque village with its natural and historical beauty combines mountain and sea. It is situated on a headland in western Elis, overlooking the Ionian Sea and separating the Gulf of Kyparissia from the rest of the Ionian. The port of Katakolo which nowadays is a popular stop for cruise ships was built in the 19th century for the export of raisins to Europe. The vast majority of its population comes from families from Zakynthos and Cephalonia, looked for a place for better life.
The feeling tourists get when visiting Katakolo is that they are on an island. The picturesque village with the vivid color thanks to the blooming nature around it as well as the decorated yards of the houses has maintained its traditional style and architecture. It is divided in three parts: the central, the seaside and the foothill, all with different grace. The central part with the main street, is full of all kinds of tourist shops while at the seaside part you can find quality places to eat and drink. The main part of the village remains at the foot of the mountain where there are neighborhoods with traditional houses and beautiful courtyards with colorful flowers, traditional cafes and a few shops.
Things to do in Katakolo
Ancient Olympia, the place where the Olympic Games used to hold in ancient times, lies 33 km away and is connected with Katakolo by rail. The ruins of the medieval Pontikokastro castle which the Frankish rulers of the Principality of Achaea called Beauvoir or Belveder, still stands on a hilltop northeast of the modern port. From Pontikokastro the view of the sea and the surrounding area is amazing. East of the central square where the Church of Agios Nikolaos stands, is located the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology where approximately 250 reliable and functional models of inventions of the ancient Greeks are exhibited. On the top of the hill, above the village stands the lighthouse of 1865 that has been designated as a historic monument. From Katakolo start several paths that lead to beautiful hills and forests, historical monuments and beautiful beaches.
During the summer season, Katakolo attracts many tourists. Every year the visitors' number increases, more cruise ships berth to the port and Katakolo has become tourists' first choice for their summer vacations. However, Katakolo is also a great destination for winter vacations.
