Limni
Few people know about Euboea or Evia Island as it is now known. It is truly one of Greece’s most magnificent destinations in particular, North Evia and the areas around Limni along the coast to Edipsos. Limni itself is a gulf, enclosing a tiny port above which lies a very picturesque traditional Greek town unchanged and unspoiled for decades, that has an unequivocally island character. Limni is located 80 km NW of Chalkida and is undoubtedly the most picturesque village in North Evia with narrow cobbled streets and traditional houses with red tiles amphitheatrically built on the slopes of a verdant hill. The promenade is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and tavernas and it is the place where the heart of the town beats. The views to the Gulf of Evia and the opposite coast of Central Greece are just amazing. This small town attracts visitors all year round, but gets really crowded in the summer, especially with Greeks from the mainland.
Limni is an ancient town with rich history. It is actually the old city Elymnion whose inhabitants were forced to move away from the coast due to the fear of pirate raids. They found refuge inlands and returned during the 17th century when the fear of pirate raids did not exist any longer. They established a new town and were engaged in shipping and trade. Because of their skills with shipping, they took part in the Greek Revolution against the Turks in 1821. The town has an Historical and Folklore Museum. Other sights worth seeing include the Church of Thotokos with its wonderful bell tower, the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, the Historical Archive housed in the Town Hall, the hermitage of Agios Christodoulos of the 12th century, the nunnery of Agios Nikolaos which was built in the 7th or 8th century and is commonly known as Moni Galataki and the Museum of Hydrobiology on the road to the Monastery.
Limni is welcoming, serene, peaceful and yet exciting in every moment. It is the perfect place for peaceful and relaxing holiday or short escapes from the hustle and bustle of the city. The sea around Limni is very clear and there are some wonderful beaches you can swim. In Limni, you can find different types of accommodation including hotels, rooms and studios but if you choose not to stay in town, the beautiful seaside village of Rovies is just 9 km away.
