Castle of Apalyros
It is a very interesting walking route, although it is quite unknown to the public. However, it is worth your time since it will lead you to a Byzantine castle of particular significance for the island of Naxos.
The hike starts from the village of Sagri where there is also a road sign saying “Castle of Apalyros”. The route is difficult because the trail isn’t so clear. After the road sign, you will walk on a dirt road in a southeastward direction until you see an abandoned house. The castle is visible now.
Going up you will see the castle’s walls first and shortly after you will reach the castle, after walking always on the left side for a few minutes. It stands imposingly at an altitude of 470m.
The lonely scenery makes the castle and the route even more fascinating. You can return from the same way.
