Kastro Village Sifnos

Kastro Sifnos is a charming medieval village perched on a hill on the eastern coast of the island, offering spectacular views over the Aegean Sea. One of the most historic villages in Sifnos, Kastro has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years and served as the island's capital in the past. Its impressive medieval character has been remarkably preserved, making it one of the most fascinating traditional settlements in the Cyclades.

Kastro can be reached by bus, car or motorbike from Apollonia, or on foot via the old path connecting the two villages. The walking route is particularly enjoyable, as it is mostly downhill. If you arrive by car, you will need to leave it in the parking area outside the village, as vehicles are not allowed inside Kastro.

The village is entered through its old gateways, known as lodgies, which were once protected by defensive towers. Only five entrances existed in the massive walls surrounding the settlement. Beyond the gateways, tunnels and passageways lead into a maze of narrow alleys lined with traditional two-storey whitewashed houses and wooden balconies. In many places, the exterior walls of the houses form part of the original castle walls.

Walking through the narrow streets is one of the best things to do in Kastro. Along the way, you can admire the traditional architecture, historic churches and small chapels while enjoying wonderful views of the Aegean Sea.

Kastro is also rich in archaeological and historical sights. The village is home to an archaeological museum, while ancient remains and architectural details can be found throughout its streets. On the eastern edge of the village stands the picturesque Church of the Seven Martyrs, built dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. The tiny church is one of the most photographed sights in Sifnos and is also a popular wedding venue. Other notable churches in and around Kastro include the Church of Saint Nicholas and the twin churches in the valley below the village.

At the entrance to Kastro stands the old Elementary School, which no longer operates as a school but hosts exhibitions and cultural events during the summer.

Below Kastro lies the small coastal settlement of Saralia, the former port of the village. Several fish tavernas serve fresh seafood and local dishes, while a small rocky beach with clear blue waters is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Kastro itself also has a selection of rooms to rent, tavernas, cafés and bars.

With its medieval walls, narrow alleys, traditional houses and spectacular sea views, Kastro offers a glimpse into the historic side of Sifnos. It is one of the island's most distinctive villages and a must-see destination in Sifnos.
