A Medieval Inland Capital Built to Evade Aegean Pirates

Chora, also known as Chorio, is located about 3 km northwest of Pothia and served as the capital of Kalymnos for many centuries. Today, the two settlements have effectively merged, with Chora forming a natural extension of the island's main town.

The village was built inland in a sheltered valley, away from the coast, as its location offered greater protection from the pirate raids that once threatened the Aegean islands. Its historic setting and surviving monuments make it an interesting stop for travellers exploring the island's past.

Things to Do in Chora Kalymnos

The area around Chora is home to some of the most important historical monuments and sights in Kalymnos. One of the most significant is Pera Kastro, also known as the Castle of Chrisocheria or Chora Castle. Built on the summit of a steep rocky hill, the castle has Byzantine origins and was later associated with the Knights of the Order of St John. Its elevated position also provides views over the surrounding valley and countryside.

Chora is also home to several historic churches and monasteries. One of the most notable is the Church of Panagia Kecharitomeni, which features an impressive gilded iconostasis and served as the first metropolis of Kalymnos.

Other churches of particular architectural and historical interest include Christ of Jerusalem and Agia Sophia, also known as Evangelistria. Both were built using materials from the ruins of the ancient Temple of Delius Apollo, linking the religious heritage of Chora with the ancient history of Kalymnos.

How to Reach Pera Kastro Castle

Pera Kastro is located just outside Chora, on top of a steep rocky hill. The castle is reached from the village by following the access route towards the hill and continuing on foot for the final section. The uphill approach can be uneven and steep in places, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Combining a visit to Pera Kastro with a walk through the historic churches and traditional streets of Chora is a good way to experience the old capital of Kalymnos.
