Mikri Prespa Lake

Mikri Prespa is a lake shared between Greece and Albania (only the 5 km² surface area). It is the smaller of the two Prespa Lakes. During 1970 significant amounts of water from the Devoll river was diverted into the lake with the intention to use it later during the summer time for the irrigation purposes. Mikri Prespa Lake contains the island of Agios Achilleios (Saint Achilleus). Explore the traditional villages around Prespa lakes and visit the tiny island of Agios Achilleios in Mikri Prespa lake.

Vegetation consists of a rich aquatic flora of extensive reedbeds and wet meadows. Numerous fish species are present, including endemic species. A particularly important area for breeding, staging and wintering birds. Nesting species include pelicans, Pelecanus crispus (200 pairs) P. onocrotalus (70 pairs) and Phalacrocorax pygmeus (100 pairs), all globally threatened. Human activities include fishing, irrigation, tourism, livestock grazing, and conservation education. A field station and an information center are available.Mikri Prespa Lake in particular has been recognized as an important wetland ecosystem favoring breeding and feeding of rare water bird species. It is best known for hosting the largest breeding colony of the Dalmatian pelican in the world.

The extent of the diversity of the area is demonstrated by the fact that more than half the species of birds, amphibians and mammals found in Greece as a whole are encountered here in Prespa, and that 9 out of the 23 species of fish living in its lakes and rivers are endemic. According to a recent international survey, Prespa is one of Europe's most sensitive wetlands. A serious threat to the sensitive ecosystem of wetlands today is the climate change and in the case of Prespa is the availability of water for irrigation with what it means for bean cultivation that blooms in the area.
