Aoos Lake

Aoos Lake or Lake Aoos Springs is located in the prefecture of Ioannina, about 20km northwest of Metsovo. At the springs of the Aoos River, at an altitude of 1,340 meters, their waters form the artificial lake, which serves the water supply and electrification of the surrounding areas. At the same time, it creates beautiful images, with the blue of its waters alternating with the lush landscape.

It is located between two National Parks, Valia-Calda and Vikos-Aoos. The shoreline of the lake is large and lacy with its beautiful forested small fjords and many islands formed inside that are offered for canoeing. The elements that make the area particularly important for many species of fauna and flora are the big meadows, the Black pines, the giant robola and one of the most beautiful beech forests in Greece. In the autumn under the fiery beech trees, the beautiful mushrooms Amanita muscaria and Amanita pantherina come out. Next to the streams grow dozens of species of rare orchids and in the spring, meadows are overwhelmed by wild daffodils.

The forest roads around the lake are accessible for those who want to explore this wonderful landscape. In the area live birds such as black storks, ashtotskidiades, alcinones, various species of ducks, crickets, woodcocks, sturgeons and black woodpeckers. In the streams there are alpine newts, Macedonian newts, water snakes etc. Frequent is the presence of bears, wolves, wild cats, deer, foxes and rabbits. The fish species of the lake include, among others Albuminnoides bipunctatus, Anguilla anguilla, Cyprinus carpio, Oxynoemacheilus pindus, Salmon faroides, and imported species such as Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Lepomis gibbosus, and American fodder (Oncorhynchus).
