Alyki of Ithaki
The Saltmarsh is located 3 km northeast of the settlement of Aghii Saranda, in the area of Marmaka near the Cape Melissa.
It is the only wetland registered in Ithaki. Migrating bird (such as egrets, grey herons, ravens) often stop to rest here, especially during the autumn and winter season.
It is a shallow, salty seasonal lake of almost 3.5 acres, which is bounded by a wall, except for the southern part where there is a strip of 15 meters wide with pebbles separating it from the sea. The bottom of the lake is slightly below sea level and in the winter months it is completely flooded with seawater (and rainwater).
Within the wetland there is no vegetation. Surroundingly, there is shrub vegetation with predominant species such as Pistacia lentiscus and Cistus salvifolius.
Previously, to the south of the wetland, there were crops on landscaped terraces while there are still several olives and almonds.
