Wreck «Queen Olga»
The destroyer Royal Queen Olga (D-15), a Greyhound, was one of the most glorious ships of the Navy, which was particularly active during World War II. It was built in England between 1936 and 1938, but was equipped with German machine guns.
This successful Greek warship, named after Queen Olga of Greece, officially joined the Royal Navy on February 5, 1939. It was the most modern warship in Greece at the time of the declaration of the Greek-Italian War. In 1941, it fled to the Middle East, where it took on the task of escorting British convoys.
On its last patrol, it sailed on the morning of September 26, 1943, to Lakki Bay in Leros. A short time later, it was attacked by a German air raid and sank. The first dead was its captain, Captain George Blessas, who received the first shots of the Ju-88 bombers, which accompanied his ship to its last destination along with the 72 members of its heroic crew.
Diving is being organized today in the area where the historic ship's carcass is located.
