Wreck «Dimitrios»
The impressive shipwreck "Dimitrios" has been located since December 23, 1981 on the beach of Selinitsa, about 5 km from Gythio. Many myths have been heard about the ghost ship. There are allegations that it was one of the many illegal cigarette ships of the time or even that it was a ghost ship of unknown ownership. The true story behind the legend is completely different for this imposing shipwreck that has now become part of the beach and tourist attraction of the area.
The ship, named "Dimitrios" (formerly Klintholm), with a length of 67 meters, was built in 1950. On December 4, 1980, the ship sailed to Gythio because its captain needed to be hospitalized due to a serious illness. After the mooring of the ship, there were financial problems with the crew as well as various problems with the engine, in combination with insurance measures imposed by various lenders. The crew was then fired and the ship was anchored in the port of Gythio. In June 1981, the boat was still in the same position but was declared dangerous for the safety of the area, while at the same time it was tilted to the right side due to the inflow of water into its hull. The non-response of the ship owners resulted that in November 1981 the ship was still in the same location.
Due to the very unfavorable weather conditions, the boat was swept away by its anchorage and washed up by the sea on the beach of Selinitsa, northeast of Gythio in the Valtaki area, in December of the same year. There the ship was abandoned without any interest in its fate. The shipwreck attracts a lot of people as its visit is combined with a swim in the clear blue waters of Selinitsa.
