Attica Zoological Park
Discover the enchanting world of the animal kingdom at Attica Zoological Park in Spata, Attica. It is close to the international Airport El. Venizelos and about 1h from the center of Athens. You can access by metro and then by bus or car (the fastest route is via Attiki Odos exit to Rafina).
The Attica Zoological Park, inspired by Jean Jacques Lescour, is a self-funded creation spanning a total of 200 acres, hosting more than 2,000 animals of 290 different species. These are divided into 4 major categories: Mammals, Marine Mammals, Reptiles and Birds. Its operation began in May 2000 and since then the flora and fauna has been continually enriching. There is a good organization, cleanliness and the animals seem to be in a good environment, even if they are captive. Most animal care from the stuff is made on voluntary basis and this shows the love for the animals. The space is enormous with highlights, explanations and amenities, but you must have plenty of time to enjoy your visit as it should. It is certainly a good place for families with young children- who must always be accompanied from adults throughout their tours. It's a magical adventure, the only place all over Greece that you can see so great and so many animals from around the world. During your visit you can watch:
- Animal feed presentations
- Marine Mammals Training Program
- Birdwatching Educational Program
- Educational presentation of Asian elephants
Children and adults love the dolphin show, which besides entertainment offers and knowledge: how many of you know that dolphins never sleep, just rest half the part of their brain and then the other half, and that's why they need to be in constant alertness and breathe out of the water.
The park has organized toilets, areas with picnic tables and awnings that have 2 large bins (for recycling and food waste), so picking at the end is a piece of cake. For those who do not want to try a picnic, there is the choice at the cafe-snack bar operating in the park. There are also scattered canteens and a souvenir shop within its area.
Many clubs, groups and schools organize daily visits to Attica Zoological Park as well as many individuals organize children's parties and events of all types in the specially designed areas, always in consultation with the park management. Please note that the entrance is by a ticket and pets are not allowed during your visit to Attica Zoo. Parking is free of charge and there are adequate facilities for disabled access.
