Kalymnos

Kalymnos is well known for its long sponge tradition and as home of the world’s finest sponge divers. It is located between Kos and Leros, in the southeastern Aegean. Kalymnos is the fourth largest island in the Dodecanese and is surrounded by many small islets, some of them inhabited like Telendos and Pserimos. It is rocky island with wild beauty, beautiful caves, lovely beaches, mountain slopes fragrant with thyme, sage and oregano and rich history. In recent years it has become one of the world’s most desired rock-climbing destinations, gathering climbers from all over the world.

It has long history, dating from the years of the Neolithic era. During the centuries it was occupied by the Venetians, the Ottomans and many more till it finally integrated with Greece along with the other islands of the Dodecanese.

Its recent history is directly related to the fishing, processing and trade of sponges. Even though sponge production has been reduced it still contributes to the island’s economic prosperity. Kalymnos is also a good base for visiting nearby islands. Patmos, Lipsi, Leros, Kos and Nisiros are all accessible for day trips. Despite the fact that Kalymnos is a small island, it offers a variety of interests and activities and is a must visit island.
