Chania International Airport "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" (CHQ) is located in the Souda area, just 14 km from Chania city. Named after Ioannis Daskalogiannis, the leader of the Sfakia uprising (1770–1771), the airport welcomes thousands of visitors each year, serving as a key entry point to Chania and the stunning region of western Crete.

A Growing International Hub

Originally based in Maleme, the airport relocated to the Akrotiri Peninsula in 1959 to accommodate increasing air traffic. In 1974, the first international flight landed, marking a new era for the airport. Today, Chania Airport οffers direct connections to over 50 destinations in 20 countries, making it an essential link for travelers, especially during the tourist season (April–October), when charter flights operate alongside scheduled services.

Modernized Facilities for a Seamless Experience

Following its 2017 acquisition by Fraport Greece, Chania Airport underwent a major modernization project to enhance passenger experience. By 2021, a series of upgrades were completed, including:

  • A fully renovated terminal and expanded surrounding area
  • Upgraded security systems and baggage handling facilities.
  • Refurbished runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking zones.

With its modern infrastructure, expanding international connectivity, and seamless services, Chania International Airport provides a stress-free and welcoming arrival to one of Greece’s most breathtaking destinations. Whether you're heading to Chania’s Venetian harbor, the exotic beaches of Balos and Elafonissi, or the rugged landscapes of Sfakia, this airport is the perfect starting point for your Cretan adventure.
