Kastelorizo
Kastellorizo (also known as Megisti) is one of the smallest and most remote islands of the Dodecanese region. The tiny island floats on the easternmost edge of Greece, just off southwest Turkey. The nearest bit of the rest of Greece, Rhodes is 78 miles away. Although off the beaten path, in fact it may be one of the most beautiful places you have ever been. Everything about this stunning little island is quiet and peaceful. Surrounded by turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Kastellorizo allows visitors to experience authentic island life, serene atmosphere and rich history, and provides the perfect setting for peaceful and relaxing holidays.
There is only one town on the island located around the main harbor. Charming two- and three storied neoclassical houses are set amphitheatrically around the harbor, all painted in cheerful colors. Beautiful narrow backstreets that come to life at night and a striking horseshoe-shaped harbor add to the nice setting. People are friendly and the island’s vibe unique. It feels like you are at a movie set, which has been indeed. Back in 1991, an Oscar winning film called Mediterraneo introduced the world to the beauty of this island and tourism has been on the rise ever since. Be sure to explore the island’s beautiful countryside, the medieval castle overlooking Hora, the Blue Cave and nearby Ro Island. Kastelorizo is an ideal destination for those looking for a real escape from the world. The island welcomes all visitors and makes a holiday here the most memorable.
Kastellorizo, officially Megisti, is the easternmost Greek island. It is situated in the Levantine Sea and is part of the Dodecanese group of islands.
The island has become very popular thanks to the 1991 Oscar-winning movie Mediterraneo by Gabriele Salvatores, which is set on the island during World War II.
It is not clear where the name originates from. “Kastello” perhaps derives from the Italian word “castello” meaning castle. The second part of the name originates either from the word “rizo” from the Italian word “rosso” meaning “red” from the reddish color of the rocks of the island, or from the Greek word “rizon” meaning “root” to signify the foothill of “rizovouno”, on which the island’s original castle was built.
