Greece is the homeland of several geoparks of significant geological heritage and of rich natural and cultural value. Five of them, have been officially recognized as “Global Geoparks Unesco” and are protected by international conventions. These are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Among the five listed Global Geoparks Unesco, is the Lesvos Petrified Forest, one of the two largest petrified forest in the world. All the Greek geoparks are managed by the Hellenic Geoparks Forum, an organization that was established in 2011 to coordinate and promote Greek Geoparks, as well as to strengthen the efforts for the promotion of the geological monuments and sites of the geological and geomorphological heritage of Greece.
