Andros
If you are looking for an island near Athens, then Andros is the right place. Unlike most of the islands in the Cyclades that are rocky, Andros is rich in running waters – thus green, lush, fertile, but with great barren mountains rearing up over it. This gives it a nice green color that contrasts beautifully with the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. Andros is a walker’s paradise with numerous of well-signed trails which lead you through majestic landscapes and among wildflowers and archaeological remnants. Home to grand shipping families who built imposing mansions, Andros has been known as Mikri Anglia (Little England) ever since the great Greek shipping dynasties – Embiricos, Goulandris, Polemis – opened offices in London in the 20th century.
It is a beautiful, modest and discreet island with a beautiful Chora built on a narrow sliver of land jutting into the sea. The little town is full of neoclassical mansions, art galleries, and fascinating museums. In addition, the island is renowned for its long sandy beaches, mountains and beautiful countryside in between. You will find picturesque villages to explore, watermills, dovecotes, castles, and stone bridges crossing the gorges. Andros Island is a place that never stops to amaze visitors, with its blistering images and alternations. HOW TO GET AROUND IOS | Car Rental, Bus. Taxi, Scooter / ATV / Foot
Car: Renting a car is probably the best way to discover Andros and all the villages. Andros is a big island, and whether you stay in Gavrio, Batsi or Chora, you will need a vehicle to transport you from one place to another. Car rentals are scattered all around the island and especially in Gavrio port. Prices depend on the type of vehicle and the season. We would recommend to book in advance in order to avoid arriving and not finding a vehicle to rent. In general, the road network of Andros is good and most of the roads paved, but there are also long stretches of dirt roads that end on secluded beaches. Insurance not cover you on dirt roads, so think if it would be better to rent a car or a 4WD if you plan to visit some of the most remote beaches on the north of the island.
To rent a car an EU or International driving license is required. Another way to get around Andros is by motorbike or ATV but bear in mind that Andros is a big island with lots of bendy roads. ATVs are quite popular, especially with younger visitors but note that they are quite easy to turn over. If you decide to rent a motorbike or ATV, remember to use suncream and a hat. Andros is exposed to strong winds so it may be dangerous to ride a motorbike when such strong winds blow on the island. Make sure to check the weather before you decide on the type of the vehicle you want to rent. If you do not feel like driving, you can use the local bus service.
Bus: Like most of the Greek islands, Andros has a local bus service with buses going to a few places around the island. The buses are called KTEL, and they are an inexpensive way to see some parts of the island. The local bus service covers the four main towns (Gavrio, Batsi, Chora and Korthi), and a few beaches on the island. The bus service between the port of Gavrio and Batsi is frequent, while buses to Korthi only run once or twice a day. Buses from Chora to Korthi are limited and not run on a daily basis. If you want to reach smaller villages or the most remote beaches, you will need to find an alternative way to get around Andros. Also note, that there are no buses after it gets dark. For more information about bus schedules click here.
Taxi: If you prefer to go around Andros Island by taxi, there is a taxi service located at Batsi. Travelling by taxi is more expensive however it may be the only way if there no a bus service. Bike: Cycling in Andros is a bit of challenge especially when it is hot and windy. The island is also quite mountainous, so it would probably not be for beginners and non-fit people. Still, it would be great to cycle around Andros in early spring and late autumn. Foot: Andros has an extensive network of hiking trails that are well-marked. Those trails cover most of the island and is the best way to explore the countryside and the most remote beaches and sights. The time to hike around the island is in early spring and late autumn when the temperature is around 20 degrees.
