Amorgos
Featuring a stunning Chora and a breathtaking natural landscape, Amorgos is one of the most iconic Greek islands in the southern part of the Cyclades. Luc Besson fell in love with Amorgos and its stunning blue waters and chose it to film the epic movie “The Big Blue”. The film might have given Amorgos a slightly higher profile over the years, but it is fair to say that this Greek island remains unspoiled, authentic and uncommercialized. Amorgos is a great choice if you are seeking alternative travel experience that isn’t colored by tourism. It is great for walking and despite its relatively small size, there are many unique places to see and a lot of things to do.
The Chora is one of the prettiest in the Cyclades, and perhaps the most authentic and traditional old town found in in this group of islands. A network of hiking trails enables people to appreciate the wild beauty of the island and discover quaint chapels, remote beaches, old windmills, traditional villages, ancient sites and a photogenic shipwreck. The top attraction of Amorgos is the 11th century monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, located literally on the edge of a cliff, 300 meters above sea level, overlooking the Aegean Sea. Moreover, once you visit Amorgos you have the chance to mingle with locals, experience spectacular festivals and taste the local cuisine. Filled with lush history and natural beauty, Amorgos will give you some of the best memories and unique vacations. If you wish to spend you next vacation on this idyllic Greek island, start planning you perfect holiday with this exclusive guide.
Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades Island group and the nearest island to the neighboring Dodecanese Island group in Greece.
The island was featured in Luc Besson's film The Big Blue (1988), in which Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can be seen.
The most probable origin of the name of the island, is ancient and originates from the plant “amorgis”, a type of flax from which the "aliko amorgides" were made, the famous ancient tunics of the island.

HOW TO GET AROUND AMORGOS | Car Rental, Bus. Taxi, Boats, Scooter / ATV, Bike
The easiest way to see more of the island is to rent a car, quad bike or ATV. If you are a hiking enthusiast, you might also like to make use of the hiking trails that link key natural and cultural places of interest in Amorgos. Car rental companies can be found at both island ports. Public transport may run between key places such as Chora and Katapola or Aegiali, but cannot be relied upon for more out the way attractions on the island. Alternatively, a number of taxis operate on the island, if you can afford the cost. There are also water taxis and small boats departing from Katapola and Aegiali, that will take you for a tour around the island and to remote beaches. Even though, there is only one road connecting the north and the south of the island, if you want to discover off the beaten path places and beaches, we would recommend renting an ATV. On the other hand, if you are coming to Amorgos mostly to hike, then you will probably won’t need a car or ATV during your whole stay.
