Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades Island group and the nearest island to the neighboring Dodecanese Island group in Greece.
The island was featured in Luc Besson's film The Big Blue (1988), in which Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can be seen.
The most probable origin of the name of the island, is ancient and originates from the plant “amorgis”, a type of flax from which the "aliko amorgides" were made, the famous ancient tunics of the island.

HOW TO GET AROUND AMORGOS | Car Rental, Bus. Taxi, Boats, Scooter / ATV, Bike
The easiest way to see more of the island is to rent a car, quad bike or ATV. If you are a hiking enthusiast, you might also like to make use of the hiking trails that link key natural and cultural places of interest in Amorgos. Car rental companies can be found at both island ports. Public transport may run between key places such as Chora and Katapola or Aegiali, but cannot be relied upon for more out the way attractions on the island. Alternatively, a number of taxis operate on the island, if you can afford the cost. There are also water taxis and small boats departing from Katapola and Aegiali, that will take you for a tour around the island and to remote beaches. Even though, there is only one road connecting the north and the south of the island, if you want to discover off the beaten path places and beaches, we would recommend renting an ATV. On the other hand, if you are coming to Amorgos mostly to hike, then you will probably won’t need a car or ATV during your whole stay.
