Elafonisos

Elafonisos is a small pearl not far from mainland Peloponnese. It lies off the coast of Cape Maleas just above the famous island of Kythira and consists only of a little town with a few small hotels and a handful of local shops and tavernas. The small island is a peaceful place with stunningly beautiful sandy beaches and turquoise seas. Once you arrive on the island you will be surprised by the shades and colors of the sea. The exotic beach of Simos is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and the water is as turquoise as in the Caribbean. The island is also an environmental protected zone characterized by its sand dunes and the endemic species of flora that live exclusively in the area of Elafonisos. Cedar bushes are also dominant in the area.

Another interesting thing to explore while visiting the island is the church of Agios Spyridon. The church is built on a tiny separate piece of land and offers wonderful sunsets. Elafonisos is the only inhabited island of the Peloponnese and an ideal destination for travelers who don’t mind about having just the basic tourist amenities, but seek a place of incomparable natural beauty to relax. Although in recent years has become more commercialized and gets fairly busy in peak season, its charm and friendly atmosphere character remain unharmed. Travel to Elafonisos is easy because of its size and short distance to the mainland (just 570 meters). Elafonisos is the perfect place to do simply nothing. Take your sunglasses and swimsuit and enjoy this earthy paradise!

Elafonisos is a small Greek island, located just off the coast of Cape Maleas in the Peloponnese.

In antiquity Elafonisos was not an island according to Pausanias, but a peninsula with the name “Onou Gnathos”, translated to donkey’s jawbone, due to the shape of the peninsula.

In antiquity the island counted a vast population of red deer. To those deer, the island owes its name. Elafonisos means the island of the deer in Greek.
