Anafi
According to the Greek mythology, Anafi emerged through the raging waves of the god Apollo to save the shipwrecked Argonauts. This small, serene and unassuming island lies in the southern part of the Cyclades group of islands, two hours away from Santorni. Still undiscovered by mass tourism, Anafi is perfect if you love low-key vacations, wild terrains, “virgin” beaches with crystal-clear waters, and unique volcanic landscapes. The island will impress you from the very first visit. It offers visitors a tranquil escape from the glitz and glamor of its neighboring islands, warm hospitality and breathtaking natural beauty.
There are several beaches to discover and many trails to hike if you enjoy being in nature. The hiking trails will expose you to the island’s beauty and take you to small chapels, imposing hills and remote beaches. One of the top things to do in Anafi is climbing the Monolith of Kalamos, the second biggest monolith in Europe. Perched atop, is Panagia Kalamiotissa monastery, one of the most beautiful spots on the island. Anafi has a charming Chora with white-washed houses, narrow alleys and picturesque squares. Stroll around Chora to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle, chat with the friendly locals and taste the local cuisine. Enjoy beautiful views and stunning sunsets from the Venetian castle at the top of Chora, check out the old windmills and visit the ancient city of Anafi. If you are an adventurous excursionists seeking a truly virgin and unexplored place to uncover, Anafi is the right place to visit.
Anafi is a Greek island in the Cyclades. It lies east of Thira (Santorini) and is part of the Thira regional unit.
Agios Nikolaos is Anafi’s main port. Agios Nikolaos is 150 nautical miles away from the port of Piraeus.
The island’s most impressive feature is the impressive monolith of Kalamos 460 m high, the second biggest monolith limestone in the Mediterranean after Gibraltar. On top of this dramatic rock sits the monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa.
