Meganisi

Nestled just 4 nautical miles southeast of Lefkada, Meganisi is a lush and picturesque island in the Ionian Sea. It is the largest of the Televoides Islands cluster and offers a serene escape filled with natural beauty, charming villages, and crystalline waters. Meganisi is home to three delightful villages, each with its own unique charm: Vathi, Katomeri and Spartochori. Vathi is a traditional fishing village, popular among sailors exploring the Ionian Sea. Katomeri, perched on a hill, is the island’s capital and offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Atherinos and the endless blue of the sea. The equally beautiful Spartochori features stunning views and is perfect destination for leisurely strolls through its charming streets.

Though Meganisi has only a handful of beaches, they are known for their crystal-clear, turquoise waters. The coastline is dotted with secluded coves and mysterious blue caves, waiting to be explored by adventurous visitors. Whether you prefer relaxing on the shore or discovering hidden natural wonders by boat, Meganisi promises a captivating experience. The entire Meganisi archipelago is part of the Natura 2000 network. This makes the island a haven for nature lovers and eco-conscious travelers. While Meganisi has long been a beloved destination for sailors navigating the Ionian Sea, it remains a hidden treasure for many travelers. Meganisi is a Greek island of the Ionian Sea. It is situated to the south-eastern of the island of Lefkada and is part of a group of islands, called Tilevoides.

In antiquity, the island was known as Tafos or Tafias and belonged to a group of islands known as Tafies Islands. Apart Meganisi, the group included the islands of Kalamos, Kastos, Atokos and Arkoudi.

Getting Around

HOW TO GET AROUND MEGANISI | Bus. Taxi, Scooter / ATV

Meganisi has only one bus which runs between Spartochori, Katomeri and Vathy several times daily. There is also one taxi on the island. When you get off the boat, if the taxi is not there just look around for a sign on one of the lamp posts with the driver’s number on or just go into one of the taverns and they will ring him for you. There is neither car nor moped rental services on Meganisi but you can rent a scooter in Lefkada and take it across to explore the island. Meganisi is a small and flat island and therefore it is easy to explore it on foot. You could get out and have a wander around Spartohori and then walk along the back road to Katomeri. From there down to Vathy which is a lovely place for food and drinks. The walk back to Spilia is on the flat with plenty of shade.
