Skiathos
Located in the northwest Aegean, Skiathos is one the most scenic and verdant Greeks islands. Despite the fact that it is one of the smallest of the archipelago’s inhabited isles, it is blessed with some of the Aegean’s most exquisite sandy beaches backed by verdant hills of pines and olive trees. Moreover, Skiathos has an atmospheric, bustling town, ancient monasteries, hidden-away churches, old footpaths, and hilltops with spectacular views. As one of the most popular and cosmopolitan islands in the Sporades, exploring this charming island should definitely be in your bucket list. Skiathos is sure to captivate you with its charm and diversity.
As Skiathos is such a lush green island, cycling and hiking is a great way to experience the landscape. By trailing the coastline, you can get to some awe-inspiring beaches, with golden sand and turquoise blue waters, where swimming and diving is a must. Beyond the beaches, there is a lovely old town and culture to discover. Take the time to get lost in the cobbled backstreets of Skiathos Town and find all the most picturesque corners, explore the old port, climb up to the church of Agios Nikolaos and catch a show at the Bourtzi, before ending up in a taverna to taste the local cuisine. If you are into the sports, there are plenty of watersports available or you can go horse riding, cycling or hiking in the well-defined walking trails. The island is famous for its nightlife and has a fantastic selection of places to eat and drink. All in all, Skiathos is a safe bet, if you are looking for a glorious holiday.
Skiathos is a Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea, situated east of the Pelion peninsula on mainland Greece, and west of the island of Skopelos. It is the westernmost island of the Sporades Island group and the fourth largest after Skyros, Skopelos and Alonissos.
It is believed that the name Skiathos originates from the Greek word “skia”, meaning shadow in Greek, because of the many trees covering the island.

HOW TO GET AROUND SKIATHOS | Car Rental, Bus. Taxi, Boats, Scooter / ATV
Skiathos Island is relatively small, and getting around is easy. Rentals: You can hire a car, scooter or ATV to get more freedom and explore the island at your own pace, especially the northern part of the island, which is slightly less developed and where access is difficult. There are tons of rentals around the new port, or your accommodation can arrange the car for you. If you are travelling to Skiathos in peak season we would suggest to book a car / scooter / ATV in advance. Bear in mind that parking can be a challenge in Skiathos Town.
Bus: Skiathos has an excellent bus service you can use to get to the different beaches of the island such as Koukounaries and Banana Beach. The main route connects Skiathos Town to Koukounaries and leaves every 20 minutes. Buses operate from 07:00 am until midnight and tickets are very cheap. Boats: If you do not feel like taking the bus or hiring a car, you can always take a shorter boat ride to other parts of the island. For instance, to visit Lalaria Beach you will have to catch one of those boats. Taxi: With a taxi you can visit places where there is no bus line but getting around by taxi is much more expensive.
On coasts and islands of central and southern Greece, where the climate is Mediterranean, winter is mild and quite rainy, while summers are sunny and hot.
On the islands, during winter the wind often blows; precipitation often occurs at night and in the early morning. On the islands, snowfalls are rare, and generally occur only in the northern ones, during the most intense cold spells.
Spring is pleasant and sunny in most of Greece. The days with some rainfall become less and less frequent. In summer, in the Aegean Sea the Meltemi, a northerly wind typical of the warmest months (July and August), often blows, and even if the sky is clear.
