Alonissos
Alonissos is off the beaten tourist trail compared to the likes of Skiathos and Skopelos, however, in some ways this adds to the magic of the experience. Blessed with rugged natural landscapes, gorgeous beaches with emerald waters and pine forests that almost reach the water, Alonissos is the most remote island of the North Sporades Island group. The island is surrounded by lots of uninhabited islets and is part of the National Marine Park that is the largest in Europe and home to the Mediterranean Monk Seals monachus monachus.
Numerous serviced beaches are scattered around the island for a great day out by the sea, however, there are more isolated beaches accessible via hiking or boat. Take a boat trip around the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades to admire the marine life along with a wealth of archaeological finds and religious monuments. Explore the old village also known as Old Alonissos with its maze of paved alleys, dive in Geece’s first underwater museum, explore the hidden coastline, visit rremarkable museums that outline traditional life, buy traditional products and taste local specialties. Alonissos may be the perfect island gateway if you are looking for a slice of desert island paradise, no matter if you are a nature lover who loves to be outdoors hiking or diving, or a beach lover looking to relax on a different beach every day.
Alonissos is the third largest island in the Sporades after Skyros and Skopelos.
Alonnisos was known as Icus or Ikos to the Ancient Greeks. In the Middle Ages and until the 19th century, the island was known as Liadromia. It took its current name during the reign of King Otto, in 1828.
Alonissos is home to the Alonissos - Northern Sporades National Marine Park, the first marine park in Greece and the largest protected area in Europe.
