Zakynthos Airport: Info, Flights, Services and Transport

Zakynthos International Airport, officially named “Dionysios Solomos”, is located in the area of Ampelokipoi, just 5 km (12 minutes) from Zakynthos Town and only 1 km from the popular resort of Laganas. Thanks to its convenient location, it is the island’s main gateway for both domestic and international travellers.

The airport began operations in 1971, while the construction of the new passenger terminal was completed in March 1982. Services were transferred to the new building shortly after, and on 3 May 1982, the airport welcomed its first charter flight, marking the beginning of Zakynthos’ rapid tourism development.

In December 2015, a long-term concession agreement was signed between Fraport AG / Copelouzos Group and the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund. Under this agreement, the management of Zakynthos Airport and 13 other regional Greek airports was granted to the consortium for 40 years, starting on 11 April 2017. Since then, extensive renovation and maintenance works have transformed the airport into a modern, efficient facility, capable of handling the high passenger volumes, especially during the busy summer season.

 

Flights & Seasonal Operations

From November to March, the airport mainly serves domestic flights, with regular connections to Athens and Kefalonia. During the April to October period, it primarily handles international flights, linking Zakynthos with numerous European destinations.

To protect the island’s fragile ecosystem—particularly the nesting beaches of the Caretta-caretta sea turtle—night flights are restricted between 22:00 and 05:00 during the summer season. Exceptions apply only to emergency, medical, search and rescue, and state-operated flights.

 

Getting to and from the Airport

A public bus service connects the airport directly with Zakynthos Town, with the bus stop located outside the Arrivals Terminal. Taxis are also readily available just outside the terminal building, providing quick and easy transfers to all parts of the island.

Transportation

By Car: Zakynthos Airport is located 4 km from the city of Zakynthos and is easily accessible from the provencial road Zakynthos-Keriou and Stravopodi street. The journey to and from the city centre takes about 15 minutes.  Laganas is 6,8 km away from the airport and the journey from the Airport is about 10 minutes.

By Taxi: 24/7 metered taxi service is available outside the Zakynthos Airport Terminal building. The journey from the Airport to the city of Zakynthos is about 10-15 minutes and the fare is normally 10€. You may be charged extra, if you carry many pieces of luggage.
