Tower of Belonia
Just outside the village of Galanado, in the fertile Livadi plain, stands the impressive Belonia Tower, also known as Polytéros Tower. Dating back to the period of Venetian rule, it is one of the best-preserved towers on Naxos.
Built around 1600, the tower originally belonged to Hieronymos Sommaripa, one of the island’s prominent Venetian nobles. It later passed to the Belonia family and eventually to Michalis Maragos, its current owner.
With its imposing façade, carved coats of arms, and decorative stone details, the tower is an excellent example of fortified Venetian architecture. From its grounds, visitors can enjoy beautiful views over Naxos Town (Chora) and the surrounding countryside.
Right beside the tower stands a remarkable 13th-century two-aisled chapel dedicated to Saint John. One aisle is Orthodox and the other Catholic—a rare architectural and religious combination that highlights the island’s multicultural past.
The Belonia Tower is not open to the public, but it is a worthwhile stop for history lovers, photographers, and anyone exploring the traditional villages of Naxos.
Getting There
Belonia Tower is very easy to reach by car:
- 6.3 km (13 minutes) from Naxos Town (Chora)
- 900 m (2 minutes) from Galanado village
- 1.8 km (5 minutes) from Vivlos
A visit to the tower can be conveniently combined with a trip to the equally impressive Bazeos Tower and the nearby Ancient Sanctuary of Demeter, making it an ideal short cultural route through central Naxos.
