Sommaripa or Kourkas Tower
A ruined tower-house of the Venetian period in the small village Kanakari in the region of Sangri in Naxos.
History
At the lintel of one of the windows there is the inscription “1656 F.N.S”. Obviously 1656 is the year of construction and the letters are the initials of the first owner Francesco N. Sommaripa.
The Sommaripa was a noble Venetian family of the Cyclades. The originator of the house was a French knight named de Sommerive (that became “Sommaripa” in Italian) who in 1361 married the daughter of the former Duke of Naxos, Maria Sanoudos.
The building is also known as “Tower of Kourkas” after the name of another owner.
The roof of the tower was collapsed during a storm in 1940. Before that, it must have been similar to the other 17th-century mansions of the island.
The Orthodox church of Panagia Kanakariotissa lies next to the tower. In the Venetian era, this was a “dual” temple (orthodox and roman catholic).
